The Food Research & Action Center, in partnership with the Center for Nutrition and Health Impact, the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative, and UnidosUS, today announced awardees of the WIC Community Innovation and Outreach Project (WIC CIAO) subgrants. This material is based upon work that is supported by the Food and Nutrition Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

A total of $14.8 million was awarded in the second and final round of subgrants to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative outreach strategies to increase awareness, participation, and benefit redemption in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

WIC is a federal nutrition program that provides healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding counseling and support, and health care and social service referrals for eligible pregnant and postpartum individuals, infants, and children up to age 5.

Research shows that participation in WIC is associated with many benefits to families, including longer, safer pregnancies, with fewer premature births and infant deaths; improved dietary outcomes for infants and children; improved maternal health; and improved performance at school, among others. In addition to health benefits, WIC participants showed significant savings in health care costs when compared to non-participants.

The WIC CIAO awardees are WIC state and local agencies, including Indian Tribal Organizations, and nonprofit entities and organizations. Visit hellowic.org to learn more.
